The target, or clay, used for the sport are an inverted
saucer shape, made from a mixture of limestone and pitch which are made to withstand
being fired from traps at very high speeds, but at the same time being easily
broken even with minimal contact from a shot.
Targets are usually fluorescent black or orange and are made
to strict specifications with regard to their dimensions and weight.
Most modern shooting ranges will usually have machines that fire
the clay targets in consistent arcs at the push of a button.
Standard
The most common, usually weigh 105 g and are 110 mm overall
diameter and 25–26 mm in height.
Midi
Same as the standard but with a diameter of only 90 mm;
these targets are much faster than the mini and standard types.
Mini
This target is only 60 mm in diameter and 20 mm in height.
Battue
A thin target measuring about 108–110 mm in diameter, it
flies very fast and falls very suddenly simulating a duck landing.
Rabbit
A thicker, but standard 108–110 mm diameter flat target in
the shape of a wheel designed to run along the ground.
ZZ or Helice
This is a plastic, standard sized target attached to the
center of a two-blade propeller of different colour which is designed to zigzag
in flight in a totally unpredictable manner to make Clay Pigeon Shooting very
challenging.
